The 2nd generation of 'Sweater Birds', renamed as 'Knitwear Birds', will make their debut at 'the show' at Royal College of Art, Kensington, 24th June-3rd July.

SWEATER BIRDS

Frustrated at not having their own identity both as a bird within a species and as piece within production, the Sweater Birds took drastic action to become individuals.

During the casting process the mold was chipped before each cast to create individual character variations, allowing the birds to break free of the production boundaries. Each 'sweater' was chosen on consultation of individual birds, then hand screen-printed and fitted to provide a tailored bespoke garment.

3 weeks at Royal Crown Derby.

I have just spent some time at Royal Crown Derby Factory to learn about traditional methods of hand painting and pattern printing. The visit was really informative and it was interesting to see one of the only bone china factories still producing everything in England.
I did lots of tests of inglaze, onglaze and ways of layering pattern over solid colour.

Waddesdon Manor Gift Shop.

Now in its third year National Trust and Rothschild Heritage has been commissioning students RCA student designers to create a range of products to be sold in its shop. My illustrations based around the exotic collection of birds in the aviary were chosen to be printed onto tea towels. The new products launch in October, so watch this space!

Herd.

A site specific project made on invitation from Siobhan Davies Dance Studios to the Ceramics and Glass department at RCA. Work was made in reaction to the building and its activities.

Herd
the familiar yet unidentifiable urban creature
often seen exhibiting cautious body language and an air of unpredictability
adapts to surroundings using discarded objects as camouflage.

Peas.

A series of work made for an RCA project in response to the newly renovated V & A ceramics gallery. A replica of an 1820's Minton dish was made, called 'Dish with Peas' and a pair of interpretations called ' Pea Dispenser'.
